ASHBURN, Va. – It took 17 years when magic was mixed very well with ugly results. It took nine teams. It required playing what Ryan Fitzpatrick considers the best ball of his career in recent years. But with the Washington football team, the veteran field player said he found an unusual place.

“This is the best situation I’ve ever been in, or the best situation I’ve ever gone to as a‘ guy, ’” Fitzpatrick told the ESPN Daily podcast.

He will report to Washington training camp in Richmond, Virginia on Tuesday. Coach Ron Rivera has said the competition with Taylor Heinickie will be a competition. But Fitzpatrick was signed to the start and took on representatives of the first team in the spring rehearsals. It would be surprising if Fitzpatrick, who signed the one-year contract in March, didn’t open the season as a starter.

Fitzpatrick told ESPN Daily podcast host Pablo Torre that “I just feel like the way I’ve been playing for the last four years, the progress of my career … it doesn’t make sense that 17 years, I physically feel great [and] mentally, emotionally I am in the right place. I have settled for success this year and look forward to it really. “

• There is no young quarterback of the future on the list. Although Heinicke inspired Washington fans with a strong display in the playoffs 31-23 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season – he threw 306 yards, one touch and one interruption – at the age of 28, he is not considered a QB future. He could develop and possibly challenge Fitzpatrick, but this is nothing like Fitzpatrick’s past with the Miami Dolphins and Tua Tagovailo or Tampa Bay and Jameis Winston, both top five.

• Washington’s defense ranked second and fourth in points allowed by the yards in the second season. It’s more challenging this season on a schedule that includes quarterback Tom Brady, Josh Allen, Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Derek Carr, Russell Wilson and Dak Prescott (twice). But Washington’s defense certainly has a chance to be among the best in the NFL with young passers-by like Chase Young and Montez Sweat.

  Fitzpatrick has never had such a defense as a starter. Since 2008, he has played with one defense, finishing in the top ten with points and yards allowed (2015, when the New York Jets went 10-6 but missed the playoffs). Fitzpatrick told Torre that this was the third time he had been signed as a starter. Two other times: Houston with Texans in 2014 and Miami in 2019. Texans ’defense ranked 24th in allowed points and seventh in allowed yards in 2013, while Miami’s ranking was 27th and 29th in 2018.

• Washington is the lone playoff team Fitzpatrick has joined, though the one that went 7-9 in 2020. In 2013, the year before he joined Houston, the Texans went 2-14; they went 6-6 in his starts in 2014. Miami went 7-9 in 2018, a year before Fitzpatrick signed, and had resigned from previous staff. The Jets were 4-12 in 2014 before turning it around in 2015, which was Fitzpatrick’s first season as a starter. In fact, Fitzpatrick has joined one team that was coming out of the winning season – he signed with Tampa Bay in 2017 to support Winston, who led Bucs to a 9-7 finish in the previous season.

• Washington can combine better offensive skills with defense. It already had a 1,000-yard-wide receiver at Terry McLaurin, after which free agents Curtis Samuel and Adam Humphries and bettor Dyami Brown were added. Second-year runner Antonio Gibson, who moved mostly from the receiver at the university, averaged 5.05 yards per position in his last six matches in 2020. He finished 795 yards and 11 touches as a newcomer. The team reinforced the offensive line depths in part by drafting a tackle with Sam Cosmin in the second round and signing a left tackle with Charles Leno Jr.

“If you look at the list, there are pieces in place, and it’s about going there and getting those players a ball,” Fitzpatrick said. “Defense, of course everyone is talking about gifts on the other side of the ball. It just looks like it feels good. The mood, the energy has been very positive so far.

“I’m really, really excited.”

Fitzpatrick is also helping the situation because of his recent performance. In the last two seasons, which covered 24 games and 20 starts, he finished seventh in the NFL at QBR 71.5. On the ESPN Daily podcast, Fitzpatrick repeated something he had said before: His one season in Houston changed his career. He played for the Texans in 2014 and threw 17 taps into eight interruptions in 12 starts under coach Bill O’Brien.

“I’ve had two separate careers,” Fitzpatrick said. “One before Bill O’Brien and one after Bill O’Brien. I’ve been able to take a lot … that I’ve learned and continue to use it in the various stops I’ve been to and just take the little things in every place I’ve been and know who I am a player, strengths and weaknesses and play according to these strengths.
