It is increasingly likely that West Virginia will play in a new conference sometime in the near future when the Big 12 is set to collapse. When Oklahoma and Texas are expected to join the SEC, the Big 12 have almost no chance of surviving, which means the other eight schools will be forced to look for a new conference to join.
With all the madness already gone and the descending madness, I contacted a few former mountaineers and a handful of class 2022s commit to getting their thoughts on everything.
Here is what they had to say:
Former players
RB Steve Slaton
“I think they’re in a good position now. Hopefully Big 12 won’t dissolve, but Big 10 might be a good look. I think the way we’ve recruited and the previous athletes we’ve practiced with is better suited for Big 10.
RB Eugene Napoleon
“I like the WVU ACC. It would be a big east again. All the old competitors are there.”
CB Terrell Chestnut
“First, I responded to the reorganization of the entire conference so that the WVU would be okay at any conference. However, ACC would make the most sense. It’s a great conference, the trip wouldn’t be so stressful for the players and we would be able to run into some former opponents of the Great East. Not to mention Backyard Brawl would be back! The ACC would benefit more from joining the WVU, but the Big Ten would certainly be interesting. “
Commits
RB Justin Williams
“I would like to see the WVU in the ACC or the SEC. There are more exciting opponents and better competition.”
WR Jarel Williams
“We could think of ACC based on our location. However, I will only focus on playing WVU and let the people in charge take care of it.”
OL Maurice Hamilton
“I think ACC would be a great move. I think playing schools like Clemson, Notre Dame and Pitt would be a different change and better competition. At the end of the day, we’re still going to run our business.”
OL Landen Livingston
“It’s been very crazy for sure so far. I’m glad I focused my decision mainly on West Virginia and not the conference they’re competing in. I think going to ACC would be great. It connects to some of our competitors we’ve played a lot in the past. There are a lot of new the teams we would play. They have a lot of competition and proximity, it’s also much closer than some of the schools we play in the Big 12. ”
DE Aric Burton
“I think ACC or Big 10 is a good fit for WVU. The competition is very good and I think WVU has a chance. But I think they stay in the Big 12 and are in the top 3 teams every year. Nevertheless, I am a mountaineer. I chose WVU because they don’t belong in Big 12, I chose them because of the program. “
LB Raleigh Collins III
“I think I’d like to see us get to the ACC. I feel it makes sense for the location. Also a lot of good competition there, like Clemson, Miami, Florida State and UNC. Could also get a competitive Pitt game on schedule.”
S Christion Stokes
“All the racing games are in the ACC, and it’s a great race in the south. It really tests the new class of the program.”
