Jacobs set a new European record of 9.80 seconds on Sunday, 0.04 seconds ahead of American Fred Curley in second and 0.09 seconds ahead of Canadian Andre de Grasse in third.
Italy was crowned with a glorious few minutes at the Olympic Stadium as Jacobs’ victory came shortly after Gianmarco Tampere’s gold medal in the high jump.
The two men hugged as Jacobs – the first Italian man to win 100m gold at the Olympics and first European champion since Britain’s Linford Christie in 1992 – crossed the finish line.
The race started tense with Zharnel Hughes disqualified from GB due to a false start.
It turned out to be a stroke of luck for Jacobs, who had the slowest reaction out of the blocks – more than half a second – on the first start.
Jacobs, Curley and De Grasse had personal bests in the final, with de Grass adding another bronze to the one he won at the Rio Olympics five years ago.
More to track.
