Table tennis will finally return to Southport after a sixteen month break

Table tennis finally rose last week from the depth of sixteen months of isolation during the Covid pandemic. Princes St was the venue for the clubs ’annual competition, no matter how late a year.

After several exciting qualifying sessions, over the past couple of weeks, they remained among the best of the best on their own Final night.

The semifinals of the main event got things started when the first Michael Stewart defeated Dave Britton in three consecutive matches before Colin Turner survived a pulsating five-game encounter against Nick Wilson to win just a small win.

Josh Taylor then took on Dave Noden in the draw final. Josh has no problem with this win 22 points. There was a very similar story in the draw final Colin Turner was way too good for third division Peter Crichton. Try whatever, Peter missed 19 points in the finish. Maybe that old chestnut of questionable injuries got ventilated early.

It was listed as a final in the second division, but when Gordon Wood and Dave Mullan competed, it was more than a veteran final. There was a fierce, tactical battle with Gordon just to get things right, and won it in the fourth game 11-9, closer than it looked.

Well, what an awesome evening of table tennis the club had served, and suitably it ended with a great competition in the final of the main event. The full attack by Colin and Michael assured you that you will stay on the edge of your place throughout the fascinating encounter. Colin eventually won 11-5, 8-11.11-9, 4-11.11-9. There is nothing in it, just count the score to 45-45.

Thank you Princes St. for what could be the start for all of us getting the TT up and running next season.

It is on this topic that the Southport Table Tennis League hopes to start playing on September 20th.

It’s, of course, subject to the constant “Covid” situation, but we can get there with our thumbs up. Also, as team registrations are yet to be confirmed, the league may look very different this season, but whatever it is, one thing is for sure, it will remain a great sport available to everyone.
