MARSHALL-Southwest Minnesota State University opened its 53rd college football season last week, with more than 125 players announcing the fall camp led by 12-year-old head coach Cory Sauter.

The team held various team meetings over the weekend before leaving the field for the first time on Monday. The Mustangs practice daily at different times during the first two weeks of camping, before practicing regularly at 4 p.m., when classes begin on Monday, August 23rd.

The 2021 team will have a new look on both sides of the ball, with only one starting striker and four defenders from the 2019 team, ending in overall 3-8, 1-6 at NSIC South.

The lone striker is a second-degree right battle, Brad Gould, who started the last nine games in 2019. Senior transfer Andrew Haidet is a leading candidate to start as a quarterback from North Illinois in the spring of 2021. Senior quarterback Steven Nava returns after playing two games in 2019 with one start.

Secondary Duce Reynolds is the team’s best-return striker since 2019. He scored four goals and rushed 405 yards with 93 attempts in 11 games. He collected 100 yards against 20 positions against the state of Bemidji and also made a touchdown and finished 92 yards with 21 transports in Upper Iowa.

In defense, SMSU restores its leading striker since 2019 to All-NSIC South’s first-team award-winning, junior team player Onte Burns. He led the NSIC with 108 fights and also recorded 5.5 losses and hit one.

Also back is senior liner Gage Roberson, who collected 69 fights in a 7.5-match loss in 2019. Senior liner Adihia Bell is another returning beginner who collected the team’s top nine losses to a loss and led the team with four sacks. Senior corner forward Marshawn Reese started all 11 games in 2019 and leveled the team level with two interruptions and made four assists.

SMSU will open the season on Thursday, Sept. 2 and host MSU Moorhead, with a start time of 7 p.m. at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
