Former U.S. president Donald Trump has issued a scathing statement saying he knows the identity of the Capitol Police officer who killed a rebel in a riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

For weeks now, Mr. Trump has been demanding that the public recognize the officers in office, even as prosecutors have concluded he has no case to answer.

Ms Babbitt, a 35 -year -old Air Force veteran, was among Trump supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol in the latest attempt to prevent Congress from proving President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.

The officer shot him as he tried to force his way through a barricaded door and entered the Speaker’s Lobby, which is adjacent to the House of Representatives room. Members of Congress were also leaving the room at the time.

After a three-month investigation, prosecutors said the officer “reasonably believed” it was necessary to set fire to protect himself and members of Congress.

However, Mr. Trump has repeatedly brought Ms Babbitt’s death to the public, calling her “innocent” and demanding “justice”.

“I spoke to the amazing mother and faithful wife of Ashli ​​Babbitt, who was murdered at the hands of a man who shouldn’t have pulled the trigger of his gun. We know who he is,” the former president said today.

“If that happened on the ‘other side’, there would be unrest all over America and yet, more people represent Ashli, who truly loves America, than the other side. Radical Left haters are not allowed to get away with it.

Mr. Trump has been on the hunt since July, when he released one of the shortest official statements in U.S. political history: “Who shot Ashli ​​Babbitt?”

Incidentally he reached this record by four words today, reducing it to three using all the pronunciation of the caps:

On July 7, at a press conference announcing his lawsuit against Facebook, Twitter and Google, Mr. Trump again brought in Ms. Babbitt.

“The guy who shot Ashli ​​Babbitt – boom, up to the head, just got stronger – there’s no reason for that,” he said (he was actually shot in the shoulder, not the head).

“And why can’t that person be opened, and why isn’t it being studied? They’ve already written it down. They said the case is closed.

“If that’s the opposite, that case will happen years and years, and it’s not going to be good.”

He made those statements in response to a question that asked what he had done to stop the uprising as it was happening on January 6th.

Then, in an interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, he went on.

“Who shot Ashli ​​Babbitt? Why are they keeping that secret?” Mr. Trump asked.

“Who is the person who shot an innocent, amazing, incredible woman, a military woman, in the head herself?

“And there are no side effects. If that was on the other side, it would be the biggest story in this country. Who shot Ashli ​​Babbitt? People want to know. And why?”

He said he “heard” the official in question was “head of security for a certain high-ranking official, a Democrat”.

Mr. Trump provided no evidence for that theory, and a senior law enforcement official told NBC News that the officer was not part of a security specification for any member of Congress.

Ms Babbitt was one of seven people who died on or shortly after Jan. 6.

Another of Mr. Trump’s supporters, 34-year-old Rosanne Boyland, died from a drug overdose. Footage showed other rioters stepping on his body to fight with police.

Two other protesters, Kevin Greeson and Benjamin Phillips, died of heart failure.

Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick collapsed after a fight with the mob and died the next day after two strokes.

And two other police officers, Jeffrey Smith and Howard Liebengood, sacrificed their own lives after the attack.

More than 550 rioters were arrested and charged with crimes. Several dozen face counts for using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily injury to a police officer.

Nearly 140 officers were injured in the violence.
