Product comparison website Finder released the company’s August cryptocurrency ownership report on Friday, which surveyed 42,040 citizens in 27 countries. The report ranks countries based on digital currency adoption and shows that regions like Vietnam, Indonesia and India have the highest number of people who report owning a cryptocurrency.

In terms of crypto ownership, Vietnam, Indonesia and India dominate the roost

Finder’s cryptocurrency ownership report released on August 13, 2021 contains some interesting results after researchers surveyed more than 42,000 people. Basically, the researchers measured the ownership of crypto assets of people in each country, and the survey covers a total of 27 countries.

According to the Finder survey, men are more likely to own a digital asset in all of the countries covered by the survey. The gender gap between ownership is around six percentage points, detailed Finder author James Edwards in the report.

The largest number of cryptocurrency owners are from Vietnam, as the study claims 41% of Vietnamese cryptocurrencies. In Indonesia, 30% of citizens own crypto assets and India also owns around 30%.

While Vietnam has the largest percentage of incumbents, the country joins Singapore, the Philippines and Ireland with the largest gender gap (9-11%), the research points out. Meanwhile, Portugal, South Korea and New Zealand have the smallest gender gap (1-2%).

“Remittances may have played a big role in these numbers, with cryptocurrency being an option for migrants who want to send money home and avoid exchange fees,” Edwards wrote.

Spain, United Kingdom, United States, Germany and Japan have the least possession of crypto

After the top three countries with high ownership percentages, Malaysia (29%), the Philippines (28%), Belgium (26%), Hong Kong (26%), South Korea (23%), Brazil (22%) and Italy (21%) follow respectively. The bottom five countries on the list of 27, which have the least cryptocurrency ownership, include Spain (12%), Japan (11%), Germany (11%), the United States ( 9%), and the United Kingdom. (8%).

This is in stark contrast to how things are portrayed in the media, as the US, UK, and Japan are often portrayed as hotbeds of cryptocurrency adoption. Meanwhile, a number of South American countries are often reported as having high adoption rates, usually citing Venezuela.

Finder’s survey doesn’t reveal adoption levels in Venezuela, but below Brazil’s 22%, Colombia shows it has around 14% in terms of percentage of crypto ownership. The Finder poll indicates that for the 27 countries, approximately 1,160 and 2,511 citizens per country were surveyed for the property report.

“The report reveals that bitcoin still reigns supreme despite speculation that Ethereum could become the most traded cryptocurrency,” said Edwards. “Bitcoin had the highest adoption rates of any country,” he added.
