It’s just under three weeks before Mississippi State opens the University football season 2021 against LA Tech 4. September at Davis Wade Stadium.
At this point, we’ve gotten a pretty good idea of how the team has improved and where they need to improve since the Bulldogs fall camp began on August 6th.
The Bulldogs rushed in the DWS on Saturday, showing surprisingly good and bad sides on both sides of the ball.
“I thought it was productive. I thought it was aggressive,” Bulldogs head coach Mike Leach said. “I thought it was competitive all the time. There’s a lot of anger on both sides, so this usually means you had a pretty good dispute.”
Here’s an overview of the five takeaways after it served as some sort of “checkpoint” this weekend:
1. Will Rogers seems to be a likely starter in QB, but Chance Lovertich has done an admirable job.
Leach hasn’t mentioned the budding quarterback yet and says the battle for the gig is open. The Bulldogs coach has announced that second-year student Will Rogers and South Alabama transfer Chance Lovertich are pioneers.
Although the final decision has not been made public, we are not very far from the time when representatives will be distributed differently, and it is difficult to imagine a scenario where Rogers is not a beginner.
Even if you just look at the stats sheet, it seems to be pretty tough competition.
On Friday, Rogers was 9-of-12 with one touch, while Lovertich was 12-of-13 with a touchdown. On the second day of the fall camp, Rogers was 10-of-11, while Lovertich was 10-of-14.
On Saturday, Rogers made 11/20 feeds to 79 yards and one-touch wide receiver to Jaden Walley. Lovertich was good with 19 out of 30 passes at 152 yards and one touch for Austin Williams.
Leach shared his thoughts on Rogers, who was up and down but continued to show good things after the quarrel.
“I thought several times really good, then we had dropped balls or sacks that cost the whole unit,” Leach said. “As a whole, I thought he did pretty well. He definitely wants to play one or two games. He took care of the ball. I’d like him to find his way out of some verses, not just O- It’s clear that protection was suspected there. I think some of these guys have to be tougher. Some people think they’re better than they are. We have to get it from them. “
Given how well Rogers did in 2020, when he had taken the lead in transferring graduate studies from KJ Costello, it is reasonable to expect him to continue building forward. But stepping up and finding Lovertich knew the top of the race after it wasn’t just talked about before the fall is respectable.
2. In addition to Lovertich and Rogers, the quarterback is making optimistic progress.
One of the Bulldogs ’latest additions to the list is real freshman quarterback Sawyer Robertson of Coronado High School in Lubbock, Texas.
Leach seemed pleased to see Robertson, who made a 6/8 feed attempt at 52 yards with 24-yard touch driver to Teddy Knox on Saturday.
He said he felt that Robertson had come “quite far” in a short time, even though he would like to see him still, especially in terms of mental reading.
“I thought he looked good for the first time on the team,” Leach said. “I thought it was really good. In addition to having a pretty good arm, he’s good enough on his feet to stay out of trouble, blocked some sacks.”
Robertson is no stranger to Air Raid as he plays in the system in high school. His familiarity and comfort in the system are already evident and help him make the transition.
Over the course of three seasons as a starter in Lubbock, Robertson made 803/1251 passes, throwing 134 goals and 11,141 yards.
3. The feed rush continues to the level.
The Bulldogs ’defense was occasionally weak on Saturday, but the passing attack was effective as the defense recorded a total of 10“ sacks ”during the day.
Linebackers Nick Jarrett and Tyrus Wheat led the way with two sacks.
Jordan Davis, DeMonte Russell, Nathan Pickering, Armondous Cooley, Jett Johnson, and Sherman Timbs each recorded one sack.
Pressure on the quarterback has been seen as the Bulldogs continue to strengthen during the fall camp, and that’s something to watch out for when they come into season in September.
Leach noted that the feed-in attack helped offset the overall defense that “left us hooked” in situations of a third downfall.
4. The line of attack has room for improvement.
The success of an attack begins and ends with a valid line of attack. Simply put, the unit had significant problems on Saturday.
The passport rush shown by MSU is an inspiring thing, but four different defenders on the field were fired a total of 10 times (which could have been more if we looked at some of the situations where the defenders got themselves out) really isn’t.
“I think some of these guys need to be tougher,” Leach said. “Some of them probably think they’re better than they are, so we have to get it out of them.”
5. There is a lot to be done, but a lot of respect for how far this team has come.
The Bulldogs faced a lot of setbacks during last year’s COVID break as they tried to move to a new system on either side of the ball without the same level of personal work done during the normal offseason.
While there was certainly some laziness last season, MSU still managed to finish with a total score of 4-7 between the regular season and the post-season and played competitively towards the end of the season, ending in two consecutive wins.
It’s hard to be optimistic about the new heights that the Bulldogs can reach in 2021 when the entire offseason is intact. Players who have not been purchased for the program have migrated and existing players do not need to learn new concepts through Zoom.
The positive results of real repetitions have already been seen at the camp as the Bulldogs prepare to embark on a season with a deep receiving crowd that includes standouts like Jaden Walley. bypass the rush and versatile treadmills that could be in their best position in the country.
