Huge challenges

A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: As one of the UK’s largest local authorities, Glasgow faces enormous challenges when it comes to waste management.

Recycling rate

The local authority has previously been criticized for having one of Scotland’s worst recycling rates, currently standing at 25%.

Other measures introduced by the council to improve Glasgow’s recycling rate include its rubbish replacement program. The council said that by removing 50,000 old-fashioned steel bins from the city’s backyards, a 75% increase in the capacity of blue bins for recycling had been implemented in 150,000 apartments across Glasgow .

Last August around 2,500 food waste bins were removed by Glasgow City Council from flat properties around the city where contamination was claimed to have been a significant problem. Food waste collections have since been reintroduced.
