Hyderabad: SHRC requests investigative report into allegation of rape of woman in hospital

Days after a 38-year-old woman approached Hyderabad police alleging that she and her older sister were drugged and raped in a public hospital, the Telangana State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Wednesday ordered Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar to submit a full report to the Commission no later than August 25.

In his petition filed with the commission, ML Padmaja Sudhakar of Mahila Morcha of the BJP alleged the inaction of the police in this matter. The commission summoned the investigator to appear with all the details of the investigation so far.

Following a complaint from the survivor, whose older sister has not yet been found, Chilkalguda police recorded a case on Monday and allegedly took five people into custody, including a laboratory technician working at the hospital for examination. “The investigation is progressing. We cannot give details now. The woman (older sister) has left the hospital and we do not know where she is. We look at CCTV cameras and check with people she knows. Our teams are checking bus stations, train stations, public places and all places she has possibly visited, ”a police official told indianexpress.com. “In two days we will unveil all the facts of the case,” he said.

On Tuesday, the chairperson of the Telangana Women’s Commission, V Sunitha Laxma Reddy, visited the hospital. She told reporters that the hospital director, Dr Raja Rao, was convinced that such an incident could not have happened on the hospital premises. Interior Minister Mahmood Ali and Excise Minister Srinivas Goud met with hospital authorities and ordered the police to take strict action against all defendants.

The complainant and her missing sister went to Gandhi Hospital on August 5 for treatment of her brother-in-law’s liver disease. During the time he was being treated in the hospital, the two sisters disappeared. On August 12, he returned home without informing the doctors. The family later returned to the hospital on August 15 and rescued the younger sister. In her complaint, she told police she was drugged and locked in a room for four days and raped by two men.
