Former world number one Simona Halep withdrew before her second-round match at the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday with a “small tear” to her right adductor in her latest injury to a Romanian.

Halep, who left the French Open and Wimbledon because of a left calf rupture, looked like he wouldn’t survive his first-round match on Tuesday after he needed medical time to be able to treat his right leg.

He came back and managed to overcome the discomfort to beat Magda Linette 6-4 3-6 6-1, but has revealed that it would not be wise to continue.

“Unfortunately, a scan done this morning showed that I have a small tear in my right addductor, and therefore it would be too risky to play tonight,” he tweeted before his match against Jessica Pegula in the Cincinnati tournament.

Halep, 29, said he is resting and doing his best to be ready for the upcoming US Open in New York, where he plans to apply for his third Grand Slam championship.

“It was great for Cincy fans to see you again,” he said.
