Raheem Sterling runs Hungary’s defense

England will face Hungary in the World Cup qualifiers on Thursday evening, in the first match for Gareth Southgate’s team since the massive disappointment of losing the Euro 2020 final on penalties.

The team is keen not only to put that behind them, but to move forward and see these qualifiers as first steps “towards leading us to the challenge of the World Cup”, as the manager explained before the match. Southgate also noted that this match will be the most difficult match for England in the group and a “pivotal” on their way to Qatar 2022, a reasonable claim given that England top Group A and Hungary are second, only two points behind each after three games.

Poland, Albania and San Marino have been sent to England so far, while Hungary beat Andorra and San Marino and drew 3-3 – they were also affected in the summer, and they came close to a tough group at Euro 2020. That included France, Germany and Portugal. The Three Lions will likely be without Jadon Sancho in the match after taking a knock in training, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin is also out through injury.

The ball went out to Jack Grealish on the left side of the box and he lifted it so Luke Shaw would provide an option on the overlap. Grealish’s pass to Shaw isn’t the best, and Akos Keaskes manages to put the ball back in for a corner kick.

Shaw swings the corner ball deep into the penalty area as Maguire waits near the back post. He beats everyone else and wins the header, but the chance is great and the ball crosses the goal.
