Springfield students go on strike to protest the school dress code of WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio

SPRINGFIELD — Students at Springfield High School voice their frustration over the dress code for girls.

On Tuesday, a group of about 20 students woke up in the middle of the last period of the day and walked out.

Brianna Midkiff, Springfield High School Freshman, told News Center 7s Molly Koweek that teachers use dress codes to punish students for wearing clothes that expose their shoulders or stomach, including spaghetti straps.

They just look at you, they stare at you like you’re a distraction even though they’re adults and they have to take their eyes off you that way, says Midkiff.

In response to Tuesday’s strike, the Springfield City School District said Springfield Middle School encourages students to practice responsible and impactful social advocacy, but prevents any form of protest that could disrupt the educational process.

The school’s principal principal, Patrick Smith, met with students on Wednesday to discuss their concerns. Principals and students reach an agreement that students will be able to have more say on this issue for the next school year.
