Sun’s Alyssa Thomas made a surprise return vs. Liberty just nine months after the Achilles tendon ruptured

Connecticut Sun striker Alyssa Thomas returns to the shocking lineup just nine months after the Achilles tendon is torn. Thomas is officially listed as likely for Sun’s match with New York Liberty on Wednesday night.

Speaking to reporters after the internship, Sun Center Beatrice Mompremier poured the beans, saying she “can’t wait” to see Thomas speak. Later, Sun coach Curt Miller talked about Thomas’ availability saying, “He had good practice today, so I say it this way. We’re very optimistic.”

In January, Thomas left ZVVZ USK Prague, the team he played for in the Czech Republic, and returned to the United States with a serious injury. Sun later confirmed it Thomas had suffered from a rupture of the Achilles tendon and cut successfully. The press release came on January 20, less than nine months ago.

Given the severity of the injury and the schedule for the WNBA season, most assumed Thomas wouldn’t be available until 2022. Instead, he’ll be back and could be a huge addition to Sun’s championship. Despite Thomas ’absence, Sun has been dominant this season, especially since the Olympic break.

Thanks to their current 12-game winning streak, they are at the top of the league 24-6 and have secured a throw-in to the semi-finals, but also a home field advantage in the entire playoffs. At the moment, they look like a winning team and may soon claim their first title in franchise history. Thomas’s impending return only adds to the good mood.

But while this is mostly good news, it’s fair to be a little worried about both Thomas and Sun. Modern medicine is improving year by year, but nine months is still extremely fast when someone returns from an Achilles rupture. Don’t just return to the field, but jump into the strongest basketball of the season. While Thomas obviously wants to help his team win the championship, it’s fair to take care of any injuries.

In addition, Sun has played such a huge basketball — 12 wins in a row, 10 of which are double-digit — that mixing with chemistry is in no way a risk. This is not to criticize Thomas, who is a very good and selfless player, but more to point out that everyone is nice and successful in their current roles and rounds. Adding Thomas, which is going to be rusty after such a long layoff, to the mix just before the playoffs will force everyone to reset. The Sun hopes his talent is greater than any negative things, but that’s something to think about.
