Twitter starts letting users tip creators with Bitcoin

After testing, Twitter rolls out its Tips feature on iOS, allowing users to also tip Bitcoin creators through Strike.

As part of Twitter’s plan to expand into cryptocurrencies, the social media platform announced last week that iOS users can now tip content creators using Bitcoin.

Tipping creators in digital currency is made possible by Twitters Tip Jar, a feature that began rolling out to the platform in May.

Earlier this month, social media consumer product manager Kayvon Beykpour mentioned that the platform was working on the possibility of receiving tips in Bitcoin.

The ability to send and receive payments in digital currency has so far only been tested with a small group of users, but is now available worldwide to iOS users through Tips.

“We believe we can continue to encourage the types of conversations people want to see,” Esther Crawford, product manager for creator monetization at Twitter, said in a briefing with reporters.

Crawford added that Tips would be available to any creator with the Tips feature configured, connecting their app Cash, Patreon, Venmo and other platforms.

To pay creators, users visit their profile and click on the new Tip icon, which will take them to an external site to select the app they want to send the funds with. To tip in Bitcoin, they can use Strike, a Bitcoin payment app available in El Salvador and most of the United States.

Twitter will also notify creators when they receive a Bitcoin tip and reveal who they received the tip from so the creator can immediately thank the tipper in a tweet or private message.

We want everyone on Twitter to have access to channels to get paid, Crawford wrote. Digital currencies that encourage more people to participate in the economy and help people send money across borders and with as little friction as possible help us get there.

According to Twitter, he won’t charge a fee in tips.

In addition to the above, Twitter also plans to allow users to verify ownership of their NFTs by allowing them to connect their crypto wallets. Verified property will provide a special badge to tweeted NFTs.

Commenting on the possibility of authenticating NFTs on Twitter, a company spokesperson told The Verge that Twitter plans to support verification of NFTs by allowing people to log into their crypto wallets: authentication NFT will come in the form of a badge, displayed on profile photos, marking NFT owners as genuine.
