At this point, UCLA Athletics will have to pay a substantial amount of royalties to the Trip.
However, UCLA football (3-2, 1-1 Pac-12) opened its practice for the fifth Monday in a row by blasting “Don’t stop believing” on the speakers. Starting as a cute little joke, it has become a real tradition, and any employees or long-term guests staying next to the Wasserman Football Center at the Luskin Conference Center and Hotel are probably tired of hearing the same song over and over again.
Continued confidence in the 1981 power ballad comes after the state of Arizona lost in the Rose Bowl on Saturday, a victory that would have sent UCLA further into the rankings and allowed them to dominate Pac-12 South. Instead, a win of 18-0 in the second half led to the Bruins ’second defeat in three weeks, and they have to return to the drawing board this week.
It starts on the practice field, and UCLA was running normally on a clear and early Monday.
It was much the same as what we’ve seen from the team in recent weeks. It started with the work of some general task forces and then an initial review against the scout team.
The Scout kick-offers changed this time when recipient Bradley Schlom replaced defender Joshua Swift alongside Deshun Murrell.
Positioning exercises, sled work, and abduction exercises took most of the rest of the training open to the media.
The group of injured players remained largely the same as seen last week.
Tight head Mike Martinez and defense line Quintin Somerville were both on knee scooters. Also quarterback Kobey Fitzgerald, striker Christian Grubb and line of defense Sitiveni Havili-Kaufusi were all in place.
Cornerback Mo Osling, who didn’t practice last week, also spent Monday’s practice in the individual practice area.
Security guards Quentin Lake and Kenny Churchwell both attacked the Sun Devils and remained for most of the second half, but both were active to some extent in practice. Churchwell expected a lot during the first rehearsals, but was in line with his other teammates waiting to complete their repetitions, and eventually he joined other defenses for more active participation. Lake worked with the trainer and remained loose during the first two sessions, but soon got into rehearsals as well.
One new Bruin wore a yellow scout week shirt. Quarterback Chase Artopoeus, who has been standing as a defender for the opposing team since week 0, joined his ranks on Monday wearing No. 15.
The number is likely in honor of UCLA Hall of Famer and All-American John Sciarra, the team’s signal caller from 1972-1976. Sciarra is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame as he led the Bruins to a shocked victory over the then No. 1 In the state of Ohio in 1976 at the Rose Bowl and ended his career in busier yards than any program history quarterback.
Or number 15 could be for Matt Lynch, for everything we know. I think we need to ask Chip Kelly about it before training on Wednesday morning.
