We knew about Riley’s research, but we were “sure” of her reputation

North Carolina Courage owner Steve Malik said Wednesday that the National Women’s Soccer League club knew of coach Paul Riley’s survey in 2015, but said they were “confident” of her reputation.

The league was shocked last week by sexual harassment and abuse, in which Riley claimed the situation caused Commissioner Lisa Baird to resign on Friday.

“When we purchased Western NY Flash in 2017, we took due care to continue with Riley and the coaching staff,” Malik said through the statement. “We were informed of Mr Riley’s behavioral investigation in 2015 and were later assured that he was in good standing.”

Malik apologized to players for failing to create a safe environment, but noted that “during [Riley’s] in the service of courage, we had no knowledge of allegations of sexual harassment or coercion. “

Courage separated Riley last week after it was suspected he had used sexual coercion and harassment with his players with Portland Thorns.

As a result of a study launched by Thorns in 2015, Riley’s contract was not renewed, although the reason was not made public. Riley was hired soon after through Western NY Flash, which was later sold to Malik and the team transferred.

Courage has not yet responded to ESPN’s request to clarify whether it was the league that gave Malik assurances of Riley’s status.

The NWSL launched an independent investigation into the allegations against Riley. U.S. football and FIFA are also investigating the reports. Riley has not responded to The Associated Press’s request for comment, but has denied the allegations.
