San Jose State University President Mary Papazian resigned Thursday following allegations of sexual assault against a former athletic trainer, resulting in payments of more than $ 1.6 million to victims on last month.
Papazian, who was president of the university since July 1, 2016, will step down at the end of the semester on December 21, officials said in a statement on Thursday.
The best interests of the campus continue to be at the forefront of every decision I make. After careful consideration, I have made the decision to step down from the presidency, Papazian said.
Federal prosecutors have determined that the university mishandled allegations of sexual assault made against the university’s former director of sports medicine, Scott Shaw, leading to further cases of alleged abuse. Shaw has denied the charges and no charges have been filed, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Twenty-three students accused Shaw of improperly touching them – 13 accepted the Sept. 21 settlement, which awarded them $ 125,000 each, the AP noted.
This transition does not affect our intention and obligation to understand what happened and how the university reacted at the time, Papazian continued.
I made a promise to our community and to the affected student-athletes and their families, and I look forward to honoring it. My heart, apologies and prayers continue to be with these student-athletes who suffered a breach of trust during their time in college, she concluded.
