Tuchel reviews the Chelsea Cup match against Southampton

Chelsea needed penalties to advance into the Carabao Cup for the second consecutive round as they beat Southampton with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory at Stamford Bridge after a 1-1 draw.

Reece James delivered the decisive kick again, just as he had done against Aston Villa in the previous round, with Theo Walcott and Will Smallbone missing the Saints.

Kai Havertz headed Chelsea into the lead seconds before the break, heading into the bottom corner from a corner kick.

But Southampton imposed penalties when Che Adams hit the net after Kyle Walker Peters saved Kepa Arrizabalaga’s leg kicks.

Across London, Calum Chambers scored his first goal in more than two years before Eddie Nketia penalized his former side to lead Arsenal into the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Leeds.

Chambers scored with his first touch of the night after coming off the bench to replace injured Benjamin White 10 minutes into the second half.

The former Leeds player on loan was assured of his place at Arsenal in the quarter-finals when he punished a foul by Liam Cooper, whose defensive header was unable to reach Ilan Mesler.

Instead, he got past Nketiah, hoisting the ball over the goalkeeper before watching his zigzag finish inside the post as Leeds defenders scrambled to get back.

The result means Arsenal have now won six of the last eight in all competitions, and have been unbeaten since August.

Penalty kicks were also directed at Prince’s Foundation Stadium, as League One Sunderland beat Queens Park Rangers with a 3-1 victory on penalties after a goalless draw.

Charlie Austin thought he scored a late goal to send Queens Park Rangers into the quarter-finals for the first time since 1988.

But a stern offside appeal against the hosts, Austin’s misery continued when his penalty – the first of the penalty shootout – saved Sunderland goalkeeper Lee Berg.

He wasn’t the only culprit, however, with President Elias and Yuan Barbet failing to find the target from the spot as Queens Park Rangers went out to oppose League One for the fourth consecutive year.

Too bad we lost in the penalty shootout. I think we had better chances, we had a few good headers but we were playing against a great goalkeeper, Kepa saved twice and then saved on penalties.

“It was an unbelievably good game, and I’m so proud of my team. I see here when you come out of Pride of London I have to say the pride of London tonight was my team because what we did here was amazing.

“Playing with a team of players who didn’t play much this season, from the first moment they believed in what they did. It was intense, up and down the whole time. We tried to be brave but we didn’t get the reward.”

Southampton put in a great performance at Stamford Bridge, but it was the homeowners who prevailed that night. Chelsea join Arsenal, 2-0 winner over Leeds, and Sunderland, 3-1 penalty winner over Queens Park Rangers, in the next round.

A great match came at Stamford Bridge for penalty kicks after Chelsea and Southampton could not be separated after 90 minutes.

Kai Havertz scored for the Blues just before the end of the first half, but his team returned immediately after the second half by Che Adams, who returned a powerful shot from Kyle Walker Peters.

Both teams went after a winner by alternating end to end but no one could find a winner.

The result had to be decided on a penalty shoot-out, and Theo Walcott and Mason Mount were saved from penalty shootouts before Will Smallbone fired his effort over the bar. Rhys James got the last penalty and a chance to win it for Chelsea and netted it in the net.

Chelsea qualified for the quarter-finals.
