DUBAI (Reuters) -South African striker Quinton de Kock missed Tuesday’s Twenty20 World Cup match against the West Indies, citing “personal reasons” after the team was laid to its knees in the remaining matches of the tournament.

“He is not reachable for personal reasons,” South African captain Temba Bavuma said in the throw before their Group I match at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

De Kock may be in trouble with Cricket South African (CSA), who is asking for a report from the team’s management.

“… (CSA) has taken note of the personal decision by South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock not to” take a knee “before Tuesday’s match against the West Indies,” the CSA said in a statement.

“The board is waiting for an additional report from the team management before deciding on the next steps.”

Earlier in its second statement, the CSA said its board met on Monday night and decided that the team should adopt a “consistent and united stance against racism” on its knees before the start of its remaining matches.

“Several other teams at the World Cup have taken a consistent stance against the issue, and the government felt it was time for all SA players to do the same,” the CSA statement says.

De Kock had refused to kneel before and called it “my own personal opinion.”

“It’s everyone’s own decision. No one is forced into anything. Not in life. That’s how I see things. That’s just about it, de Kock said in June.

CSA board chairman Lawson Naidoo said the commitment to overcoming racism “is the glue that should unite” the team.

“Diversity can and should be expressed in many areas of our daily lives, but not when it comes to combating racism,” Naidoo said.
