Arunachal: NDRF conducts mock earthquake exercise at Tawang Monastery

TAWANG- “Information was received today from DEOC, Tawang at 0935 am that a 7.2-magnitude earthquake occurred at 0930. The epicenter was in Tawang District Headquarters and some Tawang Monastery buildings collapsed. According to ADC Tawang information 10 victims are trapped in collapsed structures. Accordingly, the NDRF team immediately rushed to the accident site and conducted a search and rescue operation at the accident site after the accident command center was established and rescued all 10 victims in time. 05 seriously injured people were transferred to the district hospital. This news is not real, it was a transcript from today’s mock earthquake exercise at Tawang Monastery conducted by the 12th NDRF Battalion in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority.

The mock exercise was initiated based on the earthquake scenario discussed in a Table Top (TTx) exercise yesterday at the DC office. During the mock exercise, the NDRF team demonstrated medical first aid techniques, evacuation techniques, rope rescue techniques and cutting methods. All stakeholders also participated in rescue operations to eject, evacuate and transport minor injured or lightly trapped victims to maintain safety at the accident site.

Two years later, at a site as high as Tawang, at an altitude of 3,048 meters above sea level, an intensive 11-day training program on community awareness, school safety program, and mock exercise was organized from October 18 to October 29, 2021 at various locations of the district Tawang by 12 NDRF Itanagar in association with DDMA Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh.

As part of this intensive training programme, one team of 12 NDRF today conducted a joint district level mock exercise on earthquake scenario in coordination with district management and other stakeholders in Tawang Monastery, District – Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.

The team led by Brijesh Kumar Upadhyay, Deputy Commander with 21 personnel performed a mock exercise efficiently.

The joint effort of NDRF and other Tawang stakeholders witnessed Lobsang Tsering, ADC Tawang, YB Singh, Brigadier General of Indian Army, Local Police, District Medical Staff, Army, Fire Department, Energy Department, Convent students and media persons.
