Weekend Summary: Hockey begins, the men’s XC wins the championship

Women’s hockey @ Yale, brown

In the opening match of the season against Yale on Friday, the women’s hockey team secured a 2-0 closing situation. Senior goalkeeper Rachel McQuigge defeated 31 times and earned the sixth stop of her career. Tigers scored a goal with about three minutes left in the game when the attack interrupted Yale’s defensive attempt. Junior striker Maggie Connors scored both goals with junior defender Solveig Neunzert, first-year striker Mia Coene, first-year striker Sarah Paul and second-year striker Stef Wallace.

After their first win, the team secured a second against Brown. In less than a minute, first-year defender Dominique Cormier scored the goal and gave Princeton an early 1-0 lead. Within 42 seconds of the second set, both Maggie Connors and Mia Coene scored. The Brown Bears scored two goals in the final two periods, but they were unable to narrow the gap. Princeton are now 2-0 in both the league and the overall standings.

Their home game will be played against the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday, November 5 at the Hobey Baker Rink.

Men’s hockey @ Army

The men’s hockey team lost 1–4 in their season opener at West Point. The Black Knights scored twice in the first set. First-year defender Noah de la Durantaye responded with his own goal to Princeton in the second set with senior defender Mark Paolin and second-year striker Adam Robbins. Army scored twice more in the second period after Princeton’s goal.

The team will play its first league match away against Brown on Friday, November 5th.

Women’s volleyball @ Harvard, Dartmouth

This weekend, women’s volleyball fell to both Harvard Crimson 0-3 (23-25, 21-25, 20-25) and Dartmouth Big Green 2-3 (26-24, 25-14, 14-25, 14-). 25, 16–14).

When Harvard and Princeton met earlier in the month, the Tigers won 3–2. On Friday, the teams were very opposed back and forth in all three sets after Princeton. Youth setter Lindsey Kelly led 27 assists, senior center blocker Julia Schner by nine kills, first-year center blocker / right-wing striker Mariah Haislip by six blocks and junior libero Cameron Dames in 10 wells.

Similarly, the Tigers won the Big Green 3-0 in their first game against Dartmouth almost a month ago. Although Dartmouth won the first set last Saturday, Princeton returned and secured the wins in the next two sets. Dartmouth managed to narrow the gap and win the fifth, which earned them a 2-3 win. Lindsey led the game with 50 passes, junior outdoor striker Elena Montgomery with 21 kills, Schner and Haislip with six blocks and Dames with 32 digs.

Princeton are now 13–5 in the overall standings and 7–3 in the league. The Tigers are on their way to another league match against the Brown Bears on Friday, November 5th.

Cross Country @ HEPS

Last Saturday, Princeton hosted the Ivy League’s seven-corner cross-country skiing championship. The men’s XC team won the Ivy title for the 22nd time in Princeton’s history. Senior Ed Trippas led Tigers and came second in 8K (23: 26.3). The women’s team earned second place after Harvard when second-placed student Fiona Max came in second in the 6K run with a time of 20: 26.4.

Maahockey @ Brown

After a loss in the last two weeks, the Tigers returned with a 3-0 close against Brown Bears. Second-year midfielder / defender Sam Davidson scored his first goal of his career with a penalty kick in the second period. Junior goalkeeper Clair Donovan added Sammy Popper, a junior midfielder, to the scoreboard in the third set. With less than eight minutes left in the game, junior striker Ali McCarthy secured a 3-0 win with the help of junior midfielder Hannah Davey. The Tigers now win 6-1 and are second only to Harvard.

They will host Columbia at Bedford Field in the finals of their regular season on Saturday, November 6th.

Football @ Cornell

In Friday night’s match against Cornell, the Tigers maintained their unbeaten record, beating the Big Red 34-16. Overall 7-0 and in the league 4-0, this is the third season in a row that Princeton have secured seven wins in a row since the opening. Senior broad striker Dylan Classi crossed 1,000 receiving yards on Cornell’s lawn. The Tigers will face Dartmouth in the second away game on Friday, November 5th. Their next home game is against Yale on Saturday, November 13th.

Men’s and Women’s Football vs. Cornell

The men’s football secured a decisive win against Cornell on Saturday afternoon, bringing them one step closer to the Ivy League championship. The goals of second-class striker Walker Gillespie and junior striker Daniel Diaz Bonilla led the Tigers to a 2-1 victory, allowing them to remain undefeated and ranked first in the league. Goalkeeper Jack Roberts blocked a total of 11 times. The team will face Penn in the second league match on Saturday, November 6 on the road.

The women’s soccer team also increased their winning streak, securing a 1-0 rowing against Cornell. In the first half, the goal of junior midfielder Grace Sherman, assisted by second-class striker Alexis Hiltunen and second-year midfielder Aria Nagai, gave the Tigers a 1-0 advantage. Princeton fought five times and overtook Cornell with six shots (16, 10). Currently, the team second in the league behind Brown is 5-1 in the conference. They will play their last regular season game against Penny on Saturday, November 6th.
