POLAND – Dr. Daniel Rocco D’Amato, OD, 93, died on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Daniel was born on August 17, 1928 on 12th Street in Campbell to the late Donato Daniel and Maria Coletta D’Amato.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his wife, Marlene D’Amato; sister, Mary Marzano; and brothers, Dr. Henry D’Amato, OD, Dr. Fredric D’Amato, MD, and Dr. Nicholas A. D’Amato.
Dr. D’Amato graduated from Campbell Memorial High School and was a 1946 class leader.
He later studied at the University of Ohio in Miami and graduated from the Ohio State University School of Optometry in 1953. That same year, he joined his brother Henry for a private internship at Campbell and eventually took the internship. She worked as an optometry doctor for 47 years and loved every minute after she retired at age 72, albeit reluctantly.
Dr. D’Amato was a practitioner of true dedication and skill. If the patient had an emergency at night, he opened his home or reception. He was known to use a barter system when patients could not afford treatment. He had a golden heart, and he could never reject anyone in need.
Daniel and former Marlene Pezzulo were married on November 22, 1985. She often said that her most proud achievement was her wonderful family.
He was a sports enthusiast and loved to encourage Ohio State Buckeyes. He enjoyed table tennis, bowling and traveling. Above all, Daniel is remembered as a warmly loving husband, a dedicated father, and a caring grandfather.
Daniel was left with his daughter, Danielle D’Amato (Samuel Craig) from Poland; son, Daniel D’Amato from Poland; grandson Daniel D’Amato from Poland; and also Buddy, his faithful hairy companion, always curled in his arms.
Playing times are from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Polish Chapel. Prayers will begin at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2021 at the funeral home, followed by a Christian funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at the Roman Catholic Church in St. Charles Borromeo.
The burial takes place at Calvary Cemetery.
