Dare rewards Paralympic gold medalists with $ 10,000

Minister Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare, has delivered on its financial promise to Nigerian athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, PUNCH has learned.

Dare had promised to reward financially Paralympic athletes who succeeded in the Tokyo Games.

In Nigeria, there were 22 athletes in four sports at the Games.

Our correspondent learned that the gold-winning athletes were each awarded $ 10,000, while the silver and bronze medal winners received $ 8,000 and $ 7,000, respectively.

“The athletes have received the funds promised to them by the minister, and I have been told that the gold medalists received $ 10,000,” a senior ministry official told The PUNCH.

Nigeria won a total of 10 medals in the Games – four gold, one silver and five bronze.

Team Nigeria captain at Games Lucy Ejike also confirmed that they had been paid.

“I can confirm that Sports Minister Sunday Dare has fulfilled his promise to the athletes of the Tokyo Paralympics,” said Ejike, who won bronze in the women’s powerlifting.

“It was delayed because it passed some processes, but I’m glad I got my alert on Tuesday morning.”

Athletes participated in powerlifting, athletics, para-table tennis and para-rowing in Tokyo.
