Careless use of fireworks is responsible for several grass fires: Calgary Fire Dept. – Calgary

[ad_1]

The Calgary Fire Department said if crews had not surrendered to the multiple grass fires on Thursday when they did, there could have been an explosion.

“One of the grass fires was actually threatening a high pressure gas regulating station,” Carol Henke, CFD public information manager, said on Friday.

“If our fire crews hadn’t arrived so quickly and hadn’t put out the fire before it reached this, there would have been very serious consequences. “

Henke says there were six grass fires on Thursday, spanning from about noon until evening.

While most people don’t associate the grass fires with November, Henke says the conditions are right as Calgary has only had small snowfalls. The amount of snow was not significant as most areas turned dry again, she said.

“We believe that several (grass fires Thursday) were caused by fireworks fired,” Henke said.

It is illegal to light or shoot fireworks and pyrotechnics within Calgary city limits, except for those who are certified professionals with a fireworks license. Doing so without a permit could result in a fine of up to $ 1,000.
