Anett Kontaveit overtook third place Karolina Pliskova on Friday 6-4, 6-0 and advanced to the semi-finals of the season-ending WTA Finals. The eighth-placed Estonian won his 12th consecutive WTA match, securing his place in the top two of his group in the round robin. Kontaveit, whose winning streak included championships in Moscow and Cluj-Napoca, had won French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova at the opening of the tournament.
It only took 57 minutes to get past Pliskova. He won 24 of his 29 opening points and snatched the final eight games to the first win of his career in four Czech matches.
Group activities continued later on Friday when Krejcikova encountered Garbine Muguruza.
Promoted
The elite tournament was moved to Guadalajara from its usual home in Shenzhen, China this year due to a coronavirus pandemic.
Ashleigh Barty, the world’s number one Australian, is not defending his title due to travel restrictions from ongoing pandemics.
