High school troubled by allegations of racist and sexual hazing

DANVERS, Mass. (AP) – Teachers at Danvers praise a student-athlete who showed up to detail violent, sexual, homophobic and racist hazing rituals in a hockey team’s locker room high school.

Danvers High School was troubled by the description of rituals where players undressed and were petted, something dubbed “Gay Tuesday,” and where players were brutalized for not shouting racial slurs.

“We warmly welcome the courageous actions of the hockey player who made these allegations, and we support all other victims who may have been reluctant to do the same,” the teachers’ union wrote.

Boston attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who has represented numerous victims of Catholic Church abuse, called on authorities to investigate what he described as “institutional cover-up.”

Police and the district attorney’s office said the anonymous hockey player refused to file a criminal complaint, so they could not lay charges.

But Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey’s office said on Friday it was seeking additional information on the allegations.

“Racism, homophobia and fanaticism of all kinds have no place in our locker rooms, our skating rinks and our playgrounds. If you think sport is about bullying and hazing, you lose and our kids pay the price, ”Healey wrote in social media posts this week.
