PARIS, Nov. 18 (Reuters) – West African country Togo reported an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus in a poultry farm, the World Organization for Animal Health said Thursday. (GOOSE).
The outbreak near the capital Lomé has killed 1,105 of a herd of 3,000 guinea fowl, with the remaining birds slaughtered, the Paris-based OIE said, citing a report from Togolese authorities.
Togo is among the West African countries that faced outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza, or bird flu, earlier this year. Read more
H5N1 and other serious strains of bird flu have spread in Europe and Asia in recent weeks. The disease is often fatal to birds and can result in trade restrictions in poultry.
Bird flu is occasionally transmitted to humans and can be fatal. An increase in the number of cases in China this year has caught the attention of scientists. Read more
