Four ACC women’s soccer teams advance to the 16th semi-finals of the NCAA

Four women’s soccer teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference are on their way to the 16th round of the NCAA after winning the NCAA Championship in the second round. All three of the league’s tops – Duke, Florida State and Virginia – claim a place in Sweet 16, while No. The 3 seed Notre Dame progressed as well.

Virginia won a 2-0 home win against Milwaukee and Notre Dame defeated Purdue with a 4-3 penalty at the end of the match to a 1-1 draw. Florida State scored early and often in a 5-1 win over SMU, while Duke defeated Memphis 1-0.

NC State dropped to 4th place in Pepperdine, 3-0, and Wake Forest was short on the 2nd in Michigan reading 2-0. In the final match of the league on Friday night, Virginia Tech won 2nd in Arkansas 3-0.

The Cavaliers will battle No. 4 against BYU at 7pm on Saturday in the first game of the NCAA’s 18th semi-final. Florida State will play with Pepperdine on Sunday at 2 p.m., after which Notre Dame will face Arkansas at 5:30 p.m.

The Blue Devils will end their Sweet 16 action against the ACC with a match against St. John’s on Sunday at 6 p.m.

ACC has had a team in the Women’s College Cup in 38 of the last 39 NCAA tournaments and every last 15 years.

ACC has 54 appearances in the College Cup – the most in a conference (the next closest conference is Pac-12 with 27 appearances). The current membership has a total of 66 appearances.

Current ACC membership is combined with 26 NCAA Division I women’s soccer championships. North Carolina holds 21 NCAA championships and Florida State two, while Notre Dame won three before joining the league in 2013.
