Cumberbatch and Dunst refused to talk to each other on the set of a new movie

Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst refused to speak to each other on the set of The Power of the Dog as part of their efforts to stay in character.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst did not speak to each other on the set of The power of the dog in order to stay in character. The power of the dog is a Western American drama that premiered in select theaters on November 17 and will be released on Netflix on December 1, 2021. The film follows a hardened domineering rancher, Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch), who proceeds to torment his brother’s new wife and son with mocking cruelty until he slowly forms an intricate bond with the boy. The film stars Cumberbatch, Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Cumberbatch is known to play very arrogant and egotistical individuals such as Detective Sherlock Holmes and Marvel superhero Doctor Strange. However, this particular role in The power of the dog forced him to also become a menacing cowboy who is one with the earth and a cruelmisogynist. In order to prepare for the role,Benoît analyzed his dreams and stayed in character throughout filming. Working with an acting trainer, he used these techniques to really put himself in Phil’s shoes, both on and off screen.

In an interview with NME, Cumberbatch revealed that The and Dunst don’t speak to each other because they stay in their character. Of course, that wasn’t natural for the normally gentle and polite Cumberbatch, and he felt a bit conflicted about not wanting to be mean to Dunst. However, she too chose to stay in her character and they came to a mutual agreement of silence and hostility. Check out Cumberbatch’s statement below:

I didn’t want to be really mean to Kirsten, but I had to stay in my character. So I didn’t speak to him on set. She was the same. We were each other’s negative positive. [We were] repelled by each other.

In the film, Dunst portrays Rose, the new wife of Phil’s brother whom Phil instantly hates. Phil regularly torments and mocks Rose to the point of leading her to alcoholism and depression. Thankfully, Cumberbatch didn’t push his character to stay too far away, and didn’t trigger any psychological torment behind the scenes. Instead, he and Dunst chose a less problematic method of simply ignoring each other and not talking to each other. The power of the dog first opinions have been very positive, so it looks like Cumberbatch and Dunst’s dedication to their characters has paid off.

Stories of actors and actresses remaining in character for a full shoot are always intriguing to read. It’s a whole different take on acting where you try to fully identify and become your character, rather than just acting. Cumberbatch menacing and brutal cowboy in The power of the dog is already a rather difficult character to represent simply, but much more to really become. This intense dedication to perfectly embracing the character of Phil may well have the potential to earn an Oscar nomination for Cumberbatch.
