Ermenegildo Zegna’s Bespoke Suit Appears in ‘House of Gucci’ Movie – WWD

MILAN This may come as a surprise to some, but there is another big Italian fashion brand that has its own pride in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” where Al Pacino plays Aldo Gucci and Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci wears the film’s bespoke Ermenegildo Zegna suit.

The choices are a true reflection of reality, explains Alessandro Sartori, artistic director of menswear powerhouse Zegna.

“Aldo and Maurizio Gucci would have worn a Zegna or tailored look because there were very few menswear brands at the time,” said Sartori, speaking of the two decades between the 70s and 80s, when parts of the film took place. Gucci does not yet have a men’s apparel division. “Zegna by then was already a global brand that ranged from ready-to-wear and ready-to-wear to ties and accessories.”

Sartori worked with Scott and the film’s costume designer, Janty Yates, and his team, creating for the role of Aldo Gucci a bespoke three-piece suit and a cropped suit featuring a notch collar and a full canvas jacket. Lining and silk fabrics are from an exclusive selection of the Lanificio Zegna archive.

For the role of Maurizio Gucci, Zegna’s bespoke wardrobe includes a double-breasted suit, a full canvas jacket with a notch collar, and an exclusively crafted metal button-down blazer. Fabrics by Zegna are exclusively woven.

“I re-created the display as faithfully as possible to the reality of the time, inspired by the archives and the environment, without any outlandish interpretations,” says Sartori. “There are precise references to Aldo and Maurizio wearing Zegna and it was important for me to get into their heads in that historic moment.”

That means a more pronounced reversal, for example, or a longer, boxy jacket. The weight of the fabrics also differed, as the material was “solider,” said Sartori, who used mohair, poplin and gabardine wool, all of which were “very typical at the time.” From the choice of materials to construction, shape, color, detail, buttons and lining are key elements, says Sartori.

“I want to be loyal to that period. The aesthetic of the right moment is also expressed through the costumes and clothes,” said Sartori.

“I really enjoyed doing this and it turned out to be very interesting,” said Sartori. The designer has not seen the film so he declined to comment. However, he said he was happy with the appearance of the two actors in the trailer.

The designer and Zegna have previously collaborated on other film projects, such as Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria”, and dressed several Hollywood actors, including, for example, Javier Bardem, Robert De Niro and Mahershala Ali, who have led the brand’s advertising campaign.
