With cold nights approaching, crashing through the streets and propelling yourself through the park can be a challenge for even the most experienced runner.
We all want to get back into our regular fitness routines and shed some of that locked-in weight, but having the right gear can be vital as temperatures drop.
We’ve tested a variety of running tops, from the cheaper end of the market to the more wallet-friendly, to see which kit will keep you warm, dry and comfortable as you prepare for the ‘Winter Is Coming’ battles ahead.
Adidas Ocean Marathon Primeblue Jacket
Adidas is one of the leading manufacturers of running apparel and has a wide variety of tops to choose from but the jewel in their crown is the Marine Marathon Jacket. It is made with Primeblue, which is a high-performance recycled material made in partnership with Parley Ocean Plastic (which uses plastic reclaimed from the ocean).
It’s padded for warmth, ventilated so you don’t overheat and made with WIND.RDY technology to block out wind and rain. It also has a variety of handy pockets to fit everything from your phone to your keys and even has an adjustable hood to protect your face (and headphones) from getting drenched in sudden rain.

North Face Ventrix Men’s Jacket
The Ventrix jacket has been designed with trail runners in mind and built to adapt to changing weather conditions, which is perfect for Britain’s unpredictable climate.
Weighing just 150g, this ultra-light jacket dries quickly too and with mesh panels inserted in the back, it regulates humidity to keep you cool while running. It also has a reflective element to ensure you are visible and safe in low light conditions when running at dusk.
The only downside is that the jacket doesn’t have a hood but can be worn as a very plush base layer or in the warmer seasons.

Rainrunner Pack Jacket Promise
Relatively unknown in the UK market, Promise is a US-based company that donates five per cent of every sale to clean water initiatives. They have come up with something beautiful in their latest line of running clothes.
The Rainrunner Pack Jacket claims to have three times as much waterproof protection – and in fact it appears to repel rain like water off a duck’s back. Designed with ‘360-degree core ventilation’, the Promise jacket is lightweight with an adjustable hood and a high neckline to keep your upper dry as you face rainy streets and parks. It comes in very earthy teal, orange and gray colors.

Lululemon Active Jacket
If you’re looking for a running jacket that you can wear while working out and will also look fashionable at night – then this is the one for you. It is water-resistant (not waterproof), has a stowed hood and a zippered pocket with a hidden phone case which is very useful. It comes in black and is classic cut with no frills. It’s stylish down to the fine details of the cuffs to fit and well worth the investment.

Under Armor Empowered Hoodie
At the cheaper end of the market, this Under Amour hoodie comes with the comfort you’d expect in a running top. Specially designed for running in cold weather and made with four-way stretch technology, it’s perfect for running during low temperatures. With a built-in snood and super-soft fabric, you can feel cozy (and warm) as you focus on reaching your running goals this winter.
Under Armor’s claim of a ‘super comfortable’ sweater-come-come jacket, with a ‘plush interior to ensure just the right amount of warmth’ certainly feels true.

New Balance Tenacity Fleece Full Zip Hoodie
The cheapest of all the jackets tested, the New Balance hoodie is perfect for all budgets. It’s fleece rather than a waterproof jacket but it keeps you warm and offers ‘NB heat technology’ to keep you dry during light rain. It dries quickly and doesn’t weigh you down once it’s wet.
This loose top ensures your comfort while running, but can feel a little too loose at times. It has no zipper pocket but has a kangaroo pocket for your valuables. New Balance also offers this jacket in grey, black and ‘Captain Blue’ – an attractive cobalt color.
