Foreign governments and rights advocates have also stepped up their criticism of China’s human rights practices after Peng had disappeared for nearly three weeks after alleging sexual assault on former Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Zhang Gaol.

The tennis world has since come together to express its support for Peng, and messages from past and present players are flooded with social media.

However, Rothenberg – one of the world’s leading tennis suppliers – pointed out this week that Barty, number one on the world’s women’s list, has remained silent.

“WTA # 1 Ash Barty hasn’t released anything about Peng Shua either,” Rothenberg tweeted after noting some other high-profile names who hadn’t yet commented.

Barty hasn’t played since the US Open, so he hasn’t held a press conference since September – long before the Peng scandal broke out.

The Australian star is also not known to use social media for political purposes.

Fans quickly questioned Rothenberg’s need to invite Barty.

The IOC is on fire over a video call with Peng Shua

Former World Cup doubles and Wimbledon champion Peng reappeared in Beijing over the weekend and had a video call with IOC boss Thomas Bach on Sunday.

But the Women’s Tennis Association and current and former tennis players have demanded assurances that Peng is safe, and human rights organizations have stigmatized the efforts of the Chinese state media To dispel unstable concerns about his well-being.

HRW China chief Sophie Richardson said at a news conference on Tuesday that the IOC had shown “considerable discretion” in handling Peng’s case and “active involvement” in Beijing’s abuses.

“The IOC has shown in recent days how desperate it is to keep the Games on track despite the human cost,” Richardson said while criticizing the Games ’corporate sponsors for keeping quiet about Peng.

A WTA spokesman said: “It was good to see Peng Shuai in recent videos, but they do not alleviate or address the WTA ‘s concern for his well – being and ability to communicate without censorship or coercion.
