Bloomfield Hills High School in suburban Detroit is a hotbed of racism against its black students and parents, according to black parents who have filed a lawsuit against the school and the district amid a host of racist allegations occurring in school.
Cedric McCarrall has a 15-year-old sophomore at school and says the onslaught of racist gestures, comments and threats makes his daughter fear for her life.
McCarrall describes some of the more worrying incidents: “Hanging black nooses, black dolls and putting a rope around the doll’s neck and hanging it from the second-story railing, then calling it a science project,” a- he declared.
McCarrall also says threatening racist messages have been found. “The writing kills every n – r on the bathroom walls in the women’s toilet” and “White children say the only good n – r is a dead n – r.” “
Cedric McCarrall and his wife filed a civil rights class action lawsuit Nov. 18 against the Bloomfield Hills School District and Bloomfield Hills High School, specifically High School Principal Charlie Hollerith and Superintendent Patrick Watson. The class action lawsuit includes parents of black and biracial college students in the same situation and seeks $ 150 million in punitive damages.
“We seek to set a new precedent in law that allows for a more robust outcome and punishment for those who engage in this insidious conduct,” said Leonard Mungo, McCarrall’s attorney.
The lawsuit claims that black students are intimidated, harassed and discriminated against by white students and staff.
Complainants say black students are often taunted and threatened by the casually-used N-word inscribed on school walls and on social media posts circulated among high school students, including messages saying, “I hate it. the blacks, they must be turned off. And “Love to see a white man kickin’n-rs a-s showin ’em’ massas back.”
The lawsuit also claims that black parents are often ignored and their complaints dismissed by the high school administration. McCarrall says racism at school is taking its toll on his daughter, noting that her grades have suffered and her health and well-being are at stake.
“She’s not doing well at all, emotionally and physically, I can see physical things happening with her like rashes, welts, hives,” McCarrall said.
Mungo says McCarrall’s daughter has nightmares about being “chased by white people to kill her.”
“Parents are rightly and rightly afraid that when their child goes to this school, they won’t come out because of threats to kill them,” Mungo said.
In addition to millions of dollars, McCarrall wants the school district to investigate racist threats and hold those responsible to account. He also wants the system to tackle the root causes behind why racism has been allowed to go unchecked for so long, hire more black teachers, and provide better training for students and staff.
Mungo wants to see federal marshals at school to help protect his black students.
Atlanta Black Star has solicited comments from the Bloomfield Hills School District regarding the racism allegations, but has not had a response as of the date of this report.
Bloomfield Hills High School has turned to distance learning since filing the complaint.
