Blind Hockey Goalkeeper invited to play for the Sighted Team: “Incredible experience!”

There’s nothing worse for recreational league athletes than having one of your teammates drop by at the last minute. When the Edmonton hockey team needed a goalkeeper, they got a rescue from an unlikely hero.

Nelson Rego is 100% blind: and he became the goalkeeper of a familiar team, and he became the first blind player to play for a visionary team in the history of the province.

Rego plays blind hockey in Edmonton’s “SeeHawks” and met another goalkeeper, John Hunter, who inquired online about equipment changes and chest protection. Later, Hunter was injured and tries to help his team find a goalkeeper for a league match reach On the Edmonton Goalies Facebook page.

“This is low level stuff, so welcome from beginners to professionals !!! Send me a message if you are interested and we will take care of you ready, ”Hunter wrote.

“Nelson calls me and kind of starts,‘ Hey, how’s the chest protector going? ’Hunter later told Edmonton News significant story. “By the way, I’m not sure if this is a good idea or not, but I saw your message about the goalkeeper in your league game tonight. What do you think of my playing?”

The team was “all in”, so Nelson fastened his gear and prepared for the first time after seeing his league match.

“Legends are born”

According to the players, they didn’t tell the referee before the puck was dropped that their goalkeeper was blind – information he didn’t really know what to do. In an interview with CTV Edmonton, Rego, who has also driven motorcycles and racing cars since going blind, explains that he keeps himself in the paint by measuring the distance between the poles with a stick and a glove.

After he uses a voice to type where the puck is and if it’s challenging, he constantly follows the voice instructions of his loving wife Emelinda in the auditorium, which conveys the action.

The game was by no means a rinse, and although the Rego team lost 9-8, he stayed involved and deserved the team’s respect and admiration.

“They didn’t offer me accommodation,” Rego said. “It was just like being one of the team types and the whole camaraderie thing you get with the team I really love the most.”

Hunter would do it later post on Facebook that “These are the nights when legends are born.”

“Good for him, he’s something; bragging,” said one viewer.

This remarkable night, a “childhood dream,” like him would call it on facebook is just one step in his hockey career, as Rego also plays in the International Blind Ice Hockey Federation and is sponsored Edmonton equipment manufacturer Hockey Shop of Horrors.

“I’d just say go for it,” Rego says. “If you want to do it, do it. Watching hockey is great, but it’s even better to play.
