Volleyball drops 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA to Dayton

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana – The Marquette University women’s volleyball team lost 3-1 to the University of Dayton in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Women’s Volleyball on Thursday night at Holloway Gymnasium.

Savannah Rennie led the Golden Eagles (26-6) by 14 kills Jenna Reitsma was 11 and Taylor Wolf there were 10 as well as 20 feeds and 15 digs.

Dayton led by as much as eight points in the opening round on the way to a 25-20 victory, hitting 0.382. Rennie made a record five kills to the Golden Eagles, who reached three within 19-19 before the final margin of the game.

The Flyers also won a tight second set, 25-21, 2-0 lead in the interim. Stanza was exactly at every point from three to 11 before a Jenna Reitsma and Anastasia Svetnik the block gave MU the first lead of the match 12-11. UD took six frames out of the last eight points to win.

The Golden Eagles played their 10th NCAA tournament in the last 11 years. In total, MU is 6-10 in all-time NCAA tournament games on five trips to the second round and one trip to the regional semifinals in 2018. The Golden Eagles have won five first-round matches and their only win in the second round came. during a sweep at the Al McGuire Center in Cincinnati on December 1, 2018.

In the last NCAA match, Marquette swept Dayton in the first round of the 2019 NCAA before losing four innings to 16-time Purdue at Holloway Gymnasium. Current redshirt juniors Ellie Koontz and Katie Schoessow are the only active MU players to see action this weekend at the Golden Eagles. Koontz made seven kills against Flyers in the opening round and six against Boilermakers, while Schoessow played two sets in defending expert against UD and all three in the defeat to Purdue.

Marquette is 7-18 against the Flyers in the NCAA Division I game (since 1986) and 8-22 overall. The Golden Eagles had one of the last three rounds since 2003, including a UD win in the first round of the 2019 NCAA in Purdue.
