Kalani Sitake’s salary: BYU’s football coach gets an extension contract

Kalani Sitake has been wanted during this year’s college football coaching carousel, but he will remain the head coach of BYU Cougars for the foreseeable future.

On Friday, the school announced that it and Sitake have agreed on a “new, unprecedented” deal to keep him at BYU for the 2027 term.

“There has been a lot of movement among college football head coaches in recent days and weeks,” BYU sports director Tom Holmoe said in a statement. “Today, I am excited to learn that Kalani will continue to be our leader, coach and mentor.

“Over the last 50 years, BYU has had only four head coaches. Consistency, creativity and culture have been our hallmarks. Kalani will continue to strengthen our football team culture and develop young leaders with an emphasis on ‘love and learning’. I am grateful to Kalan and the Sitake family for their commitment to BYU: lle.

Sitake said in a statement: “I am grateful for the trust that Tom Holmoe, (University) President (Kevin) Worthen and the administration will continue in my role in leading BYU’s football program.

“Both as a former player and a BYU fan, it is an honor to be the head coach at this great university. I am blessed to lead a football program full of awesome young men, great coaches and staff, and some of the best fans in the world. We are all excited about the opportunities ahead as we prepare to enter the Big 12.

Sitakea, 46, was widely regarded as a potential candidate for head coach at both USC and Washington after schools separated Clay Helton and Jimmy Lake.

Then this week, John Canzano of Oregon said Sitake interviewed a job in Oregon that opened when Mario Cristobal left for Miami.

Canzano had written earlier on Friday that: “I didn’t get the impression that the Ducks were wild about this. The whisper is that either Sitake didn’t interview well or expressed hesitation to leave BYU. I’d be surprised if he was chosen for this reason, but we’ve seen strangers of 180 degrees.

Sitake had become an interesting candidate for various schools as he has led Cougars to two consecutive 10 wins and will become two consecutive 11 year victories if they win the UAB Blazers Independence Bowl in December. 18.

In preview of coaching carousel in late November, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman selected Sitake as the sixth on the list of 33 coaches to be considered.

“He’s done an excellent job in Provo, Utah,” Feldman wrote. “The 46-year-old has a good knowledge of Pac-12 for a decade in Utes and some time in the state of Oregon. Sitake’s teams are physical, tough and smart, and he has very strong West Coast recruiting ties.

“Sitake has been 20-3 in the last two seasons and 4-0 against the Pac-12 teams this season. He is coaching his alma mater and BYU is ready to increase his profile by moving to the Big 12, but he is one of the lower paid coaches. 25 and may be interested in listening to Washington and USC if they come after him. ”

In six years at the helm of the BYU program, Sitake’s record is 48-28. Five of these campaigns had winning seasons and have a bowl record of 3-1.
