Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal Twitter account was “briefly compromised,” his office posted on the social networking site early Sunday morning, after sharing a fraudulent link promising a bitcoin giveaway.

“PM’s Twitter handle @narendramodi was very briefly compromised. The matter was forwarded to Twitter and the account was immediately secured. During the brief period the account was compromised, any tweet shared should be ignored,” he said. PMO India tweeted.

The account has now been restored and the malicious tweets have been deleted.

According to screenshots shared on Twitter by several users, the tweets posted from PM Modi’s @narendramodi account read: “India has officially accepted bitcoin as legal tender. The government has officially purchased 500 BTC and distributed them to all residents of the country. ” In addition to the tweet, a possible scam link was also attached.

The tweet was quickly deleted, but not before #Hacked started to become a trend in India.

Users flooded the microblogging site with the screenshot of the now deleted tweet.

Political activist Tehseen Poonawalla also took to Twitter and said: “Has the Twitter account of the Honorable PM shri #NarendraModi ji been hacked? And the promise of #Bitcoin !!”

Another Twitter user wrote: “#PMmodi #modi account #hacked, please don’t click the link. It is a scam. … Even PM’s account is not secure. foreign influence? Security verified by #Twitter compromised? “

Earlier, in September 2020, the Twitter account linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal website and mobile app was hacked by an unknown group.
