Niklas Nikolajsen, who was one of three to found the Swiss cryptocurrency platform known as Bitcoin Suisse in 2013, will step down from the business as of January 1.

The Zug-based company has announced that Nikolajsen will step down as chairman of the board to replace current board member Luzius Meisser.

Nikolajsen will retain the role of Honorary President but will not actively run the company.

“In 2013, I launched Bitcoin Suisse, with Fabian Hediger and Andrej Majcen, convinced of the potential of digital assets and crypto-financial services,” Nikolajsen said in a statement upon his departure. “It was an incredible journey and an exceptional privilege to see our dreams come true.”

Originally from Denmark, Nikolajsen was one of the early adopters of bitcoin and had come to Switzerland with the aim of bringing it to a country known for its strong and traditional banking structure.

After nearly crossing $ 70,000 in November, bitcoin fell again and hovered around $ 47,000 last week, a sign of volatility long discussed by many analysts.

As reported by the company, Bitcoin Switzerland currently has CHF 6 billion (approximately $ 6.5 billion) of crypto assets in direct deposit and has generated revenue of CHF 70.3 million (approximately $ 76 million). in the first half of 2021.

The new management plans to continue trying to gain acceptance for cryptocurrency in the Swiss economy.

“I am extremely grateful and very proud of the major role that Bitcoin Suisse has played in achieving this goal, as well as our role in founding the Swiss crypto financial services market as it exists today,” said Nikolajsen.
