Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai has never made allegations of sexual violence

Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai said on Sunday that he had never accused anyone of sexual abuse and did not plan to travel abroad.

“First, it’s important to stress an equally important point: I’ve never said or written about anyone’s rape,” Peng said in an interview with Singaporean Lianhe Zaobao.

Speaking about the sex offense charges he removed from his account on the Weibo social media platform, he said it was his “personal business” and pointed out it was a misunderstanding, Sputnik reports.

The tennis player added that he lived in Beijing unattended and did not intend to travel abroad due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shuai had sent waves of shock when he accused a senior Chinese government official of Zhang Gaol of sexual exploitation. The most significant case of the Chinese # MeToo movement was kept strictly hidden and the reputation of the authorities involved was secured at all costs.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said in a statement last week that its president, Thomas Bach, had a 30-minute video call with three-time Olympian Peng Shua, joined by a Chinese sports authority and an IOC official.

The statement said that during the call, Peng seemed to “feel well” and “relaxed,” saying he “would like his privacy respected.” The IOC did not explain how the video call with Peng had been arranged because other parties have had difficulty reaching him.
