Another earthquake strikes near Gardendale

The US Geological Survey reported that a 2.3-magnitude earthquake occurred at 7:02 a.m. Thursday. The earthquake occurred 4.97 miles southeast of Gardendale at a depth of 1.3 miles.

It was the only earthquake that occurred last week and the first in six that occurred about 8.7 miles northeast of Gardendale between December 15 and 16. After the original reports of four earthquakes, more earthquakes – with a magnitude of 1.9 and 1.6 – were reported late in the evening of December 15, according to the US Geological Survey.

After those earthquakes, the Texas Railroad Commission required seven deep waste disposal wells in the SRA to suspend injections until further notice. The Texas Railroad also said that its inspectors will “examine well disposal operations in the vicinity of seismic activity” that occurred near Midland.

There have been 18 earthquakes around the Midland-Odessa-Garden City area in the last 30 days, according to EarthquakeTrack.com, and 241 in the past 365 days.
