5 sustainable fashion resolutions to make by 2022

New Year’s resolutions aren’t always the most positive of things – they’re traditionally centered around ideas like weight loss, and can often show that you’re not that great yet.

However, moving into the new year brings with it an opportunity to reflect on your life – and perhaps think about the positive changes you can make. Especially after Cop26 in November 2021, many of us are thinking about how our daily lives can become more sustainable.

The fashion industry is a field that cares about the environment. “We take materials, turn them into clothes and after a while they’re thrown away, and the impact is huge,” says Marilyn Martinez, project manager at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation fashion initiative.

“In 2018, the fashion industry accounted for 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Too wasteful and polluting to run in the long term.”

A 2017 report from the foundation found that textile production generates 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases per year, which is why we want to switch to a circular economy – “where waste is removed, resources are circulated, and nature is regenerated”.

Martinez wants to see a major overhaul of how the fashion and textile industries work and says: “Brands need to do more than just change some materials or add some new options to what they do; it’s about redesigning the whole system.”

This is Martinez’s ultimate resolution to help make your fashion choices more sustainable in 2022 – and hopefully contribute to positively changing the industry. His best advice is to stick with them long term? “Think before you buy,” he advises. “Many services are available to extend the use of clothing.”

1. Use more of what you already have
“How can you increase your use of clothing?” Martinez asked. “For example, better maintenance, repair, adjustment, sewing.”

2. Select ‘used’ first
“For fashion to thrive in the future, it is necessary to shift to a circular economy designed to eliminate waste, keep products in use and regenerate nature,” advises Martinez. He recommends thinking about new ways to shop that don’t buy new — such as resale or lease options.

3. If you don’t use it anymore, make sure it doesn’t go to landfill
“Think about reselling, swapping, renting, or sharing,” says Martinez. He cites new research from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation “which shows business models such as leasing, resale, repair and remake could be worth $700 billion by 2030 and provide one-third of the greenhouse gas reductions needed to put the fashion industry at 1.5 degrees.” Celsius pathway” (meaning global warming is limited to 1.5 degrees, an ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement).

4. Give brand feedback
“Tell brands how they can do better, give them feedback on design failures or ideas on how to improve your experience,” says Martinez. “More and more customers are asking for better choices when it comes to clothing and as a result, we are seeing enormous levels of innovation and growth in the circular economy business model.

“Our work shows that reselling, leasing, repairing and remanufacturing have the potential to grow from the current 3.5% of the global fashion market to 23% by 2030. Much of this is driven by brands looking to meet the demands of their customers.”

5. Spread the word about a new way to access and enjoy fashion
Martinez added: “The ultimate goal is to create a fashion industry where whatever choices we make about what to wear, we can have a positive impact.”
