Indian-born New Zealand cricketer Ajaz Patel won the ICC Player of the Year award on Monday after his incredible 10-point throw. Virat Kohli and Co. in another test in Mumbai.
The left-hand spinner was nominated for an award alongside the Indian opening game Mayank Agarwal and Australian pacifier Mitchell Starc, but defeated them thanks to their incredibly rare achievement.
Ajaz picked up 14 cards in the Mumbai test match in early December against India, including all 10 in the first set, and became only the third player in test history after Jim Laker and Anil Kumble to reach a significant milestone.
Born in Mumbai, Ajaz made a fairytale return to his hometown on his first tour of India with a test team.
Ajaz ended the first day of the test when all four Indian visits fell in his name, and impressed the first day of the next day with the networks delivered in a row.
Although he was denied a hat trick, Ajaz took all 10 cards in turn, which even received applause from the opposition camp.
“Personally, I like one of the biggest cricket days of my life. And there will probably always be, ”Ajaz said at the end of the test match.
JP Duminy, a December member of the ICC Voting Academy, praised the achievement.
“What a historic achievement! Taking 10 wickets in turn is an achievement that needs to be celebrated. There is no doubt that Ajaz’s performance is a milestone that will be remembered in the years to come, the South African cricketer said.
