CONOVER – Pickleball, a combination of badminton, tennis and table tennis, is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States. Charles Bolick Jr. noticed the trend in 2013 and helped the local YMCA expand its programming to offer saltball to its members.
The YMCA recently introduced new indoor pickleball fields named after Bolick at the Adrian L. Shuford Jr. YMCA in Conover.
According to his wife Nancy Bolick, “Charles was a man who loved people, enjoyed golf and tennis, and remained active at the YMCA for many, many years. It was on its way to Beech Mountain in 2013 when he saw the group gather to play pickles. From there, he began learning the game. and defended its introduction into the YMCA. “
Pickleball can be played by people of all ages and fitness levels. It’s quick to learn and affordable to play.
“While the popularity of pickle ball is growing in the age group of 55 and older, it is becoming equally popular with young people and families,” said Kara Cloninger, executive director of Adrian L. Shuford Jr. YMCA.
The YMCA currently offers an open pickleball game in several branches to its members, and no equipment or previous experience is required. Paddles are available and a rotation system is used to ensure everyone is welcome to play. On both indoor and outdoor courts, members can play all year round.
