Don’t question Novak Djokovic’s legacy, Alexander Zverev says

Alexander Zverev fiercely defended world champion Novak Djokovic on Saturday, saying the visa saga that shook the tennis world before the Australian Open doesn’t tarnish his legacy.

Djokovic arrived in Melbourne with a medical exception to Australia’s requirement to vaccinate visitors against COVID-19 vaccines, but his visa was revoked first on arrival and then again on Friday when he won the trial earlier this week.

His hopes of winning the record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open could end in the outcome of another lawsuit on Sunday.

Djokovic’s determination to play in the tournament without vaccinations angered Australian audiences and received criticism from other players, but third-placed Zverev said he was still a steep figure in the sport.

“I don’t know what the image is around the fans,” he told reporters.

“I know he’s still seen one of the biggest players in the sport because his accomplishments aren’t taken away. He still won 20 Grand Slam tournaments. He still has the most weeks in the world. He still has the most Masters series (titles).” Still for me, one of the greatest players of all time. Of course, this is not a nice thing for everyone, especially for him. But don’t question his legacy because of this. “

Leaving Djokovic out of a tournament he has won nine times would increase the chances of players like Zverev knocking on the door in Grand Slam tournaments for years.

Zverev named himself among the nominees to be seen in Melbourne Park along with US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece and sixth place Rafael Nadal, who is up to date with Djokovic and absent Roger Federer in record 20 Grand Slam titles.

“I’ve been practicing with Rafa, who I think is playing in an incredible way again now,” said Spaniard Zverev.

Zverev was wearing a T-shirt in German colors to commemorate last year’s Tokyo Olympics, where he won gold in singles, the proudest moment of his career.

He said the clothes gave him a good feel before the Grand Slam.

“I got the biggest win, the biggest tournament I won with this outfit. It reminds me of amazing memories,” he said.

“I just wanted to experience that feeling before the tournament starts here.”
