A doctor warned an unusual symptom in the eyes could be a lesser-known sign of coronavirus Omicron variant.
When Covid first started to spread, people were told to be aware of three classic symptoms, but new mutations led to other symptoms appearing.
The three main indicators of Covid-19 are a high temperature, a new continuous cough and a loss or change in your sense of smell or taste.
However, unlike other variants, Omicron exhibited symptoms that become apparent in different parts of the body, according to the mirror.
The variant’s symptoms have been described as mild and more like a cold, but the new strain of Omicron has other indicators, including one that causes pain in the the eyes.
Here’s what you need to know about Omicron’s new symptom, revealed by GP Nina Aslam.
Dr Aslam said the Express that the surprising symptom of Omicron that can appear in the eyes is conjunctivitis.
Conjunctivitis or pink eye is inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the thin membrane that lines the inside of your eyelids.

The lesser-known sign of the virus was first seen in a 29-year-old man in March 2020.
The woman who had minimal respiratory symptoms but suffered from “a severe case of conjunctivitis” tested positive for coronavirus.
Dr Aslam explained how the virus targets the eyes, saying: “The cell receptors through which Covid variants enter the body are present in the eye.”
She added that a preliminary study also revealed that Omicron may have a greater ability to impact the eyes than other variants.
The symptom can appear in people who are otherwise asymptomatic.
The GP advised us to protect our eyes by keeping them clean and treating any red eyes or discharge promptly.
She said: “Wipe any crust from each eye using a separate, clean cotton swab dipped in cooled boiled water.”
In case of light conjunctivitis infections, we can use certain eye drops or ophthalmic ointments as treatment.

What are the main symptoms of Omicron?
Common signs of Omicron according to the ZOE Covid study are:

Dry/itchy throat

Runny nose

To sneeze

Mild muscle pain

Tired
Other reported signs of the variant include congestion, brain fog, rash, conjunctivitis, nausea or vomiting, with some people also experiencing sleep paralysis and night sweats.
More recently, a hospital in Berlin revealed that fainting could also be a sign of the virus.
Some symptoms also require urgent medical attention. The CDC has asked people to keep an eye out for pale, gray, or blue skin, lips, or fingernails, which could indicate concerning blood oxygen levels.
Dr Anqelique Coetzee, who first raised the alarm about the new variant in southern Africa, warned that those who are not vaccinated may experience symptoms such as headaches and muscle aches more intensely.
