No. 23/22 men’s basketball drops to 66-65 at K-Staten

AUSTIN, Texas Senior Marcus Carr recorded a 25-point record for the season, but No. 23/22 Texas (13-5, 3-3 Big 12) dropped a tough 66-65 decision for Kansas State (10-7, 2-4 Big 12) on Tuesday night at the Frank Erwin Center. With the defeat, Longhorns dropped consecutive games for the first time this season.

Carr hit 6/13 goals and 11/12 free throws in 36 minutes. Senior Timmy Allen was the only Texas player to score a double – digit score with 15 points (5-6 FG, 5-8 feet) and six rebounds in 37 minutes. Texas set a team record for the season in both free throws (21) and attempts (26) during the loss.

After Mark Smith’s semi-final gave the Wildcats a 6-5 lead at 16:25, Texas used the 8-0 run over the next three minutes to grab the 13-6 lead. Andrew Jones lot, 13:52 left. Longhorns raised his pillow to as many as nine points (22-13) after the game. Courtney Ramey at three points 9:18.

A pair of Allen’s free throws led to Texas ’26-19 lead with 6:14 left, but K-State responded with a 10-4 spurt over the next three minutes, narrowing the deficit to 30-29 after Mike McGuirl’s three-point lead. At 2:59. Allen finished a beautiful feed from Jones after five seconds, offering Longhorns a 35-31 margin break. Texas changed their free throws 14/16, while K-State hit just 5/10 of the line in the opening 20 minutes.

Longhorns took a 44-40 lead after the Allen jumper with 15:16 left, but the Wildcats responded by making seven straight points to grab a 47-44 lead after Mark Smith’s layup with a 12:11 mark. Both teams changed leadership five times over the next six minutes as Carr hit in a row and gave Texas a 59-55 cushion 6:08 left. Carr scored 19 of his 19 points as he shot 6/10 goals in the second half, including 2/4 threes and 5/6 free throws.

UT added their pillow 65-60 in the Allen layup 3:32 left, but that would mark the final point of the race for Longhorns. Nigel Pack hit the jumper with 3:13 and cut the lead to 65-62, and Markquis Nowell turned the free throw pair to 65-64 with 1:56 left. Pack then made a split at 1:13 to give the Wildcats a 66-65 lead.

Texas had a couple of opportunities in the last minute to grab the lead, but it couldn’t change. Ramey missed the jump with 42 seconds left. After a defensive stop, Longhorns got the ball 12 seconds left. Carr left the jumper from the right baseline after two seconds, and the Wildcats snatched the record to seal the record.

Texas will return to operations when it hosts the Oklahoma State event on Saturday, January 22nd. The hint is set at 1 p.m. at Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally through either ESPN or ESPN2.
