In his first fight for India since giving up the captaincy in all formats, Virat Kohli looked like a million dollars while batting. In the first ODI between India and South Africa in Paarl, Kohli scored a polished knock of 51 on 63 balls. It’s a gentle knock, which only includes three boundaries but despite that, Kohli has a strike-rate of over 80 to be proud of.
It looked like century number 71 was on the card, but when the hundred jinx looked to break and release his 44th ton ODI, Kohli played a sweep shot that went straight to Temba Bavuma. Kohli’s dismissal resulted in a collapse in which India did not recover and lost the game by 31 runs.
However, not everyone will go south for Kohli, as former South Africa referee Allan Donald feels the former India skipper is on track to rediscover his best. Admiring the way Kohli bathed in the Cape Town Test, scoring a brilliant 79 in the first innings – very similar to his monk -like approach to Paarl on Wednesday – Donald felt that South Africa was good to Kohli, who was cause Kohli showed a lot of patience with his beating.
“I’m not sure if Virat was technically exposed, but South Africa cracked in key areas and let the pitch do the business when bowling with him. The bowlers were piled on the main pressure.
In weighing Kohli’s future, Donald made a big statement. Known as ‘White Lightening’ in the days of his playing, Donald mentioned that Kohli’s slight decline in form was not experienced by former greats. Giving the example of Smith’s compatriot Steve Smith, the former South African was quick to note that every batter changes after a thin patch and feels it won’t be long before Kohli returns to his best fight.
“Is Virat invincible? No. But even the best went through a slump, because the game was a great leveler. Even Steve Smith hasn’t really been on fire since he came back after the ball interference issue. I know Virat’s standards and I’m sure he’ll be back at some point. It won’t be long, “Donald added.
