Georgia football winners and losers from the 2022 list move
Winner: Kirby Smart’s vision
Georgia football won the national championship this month and made it the Smart Wanted. The Bulldogs had a punitive defense. Its attack scored a goal when necessary, interfering with the transient crime that exploded in the physical running game.
And when Georgia had to take over in the fourth quarter, it did so against the Alabama team that has taken over the throne in college football for the past decade.
The Bulldogs built their programs thanks to recruitment, signing the elite class after another. It gives Georgia a huge margin of error for much of its schedule. In the championship match, its best players were able to play big games and win the school’s first national championship since 1980.
Of course, the downside to building this way is that you have a lot of talented players who want to play. Thanks to the transfer portal, they can now do it elsewhere.
Eight players have entered the transfer portal since Georgia defeated Alabama. But these departures best illustrate how talented this Georgian team was. Five of those eight players are on their way to other SEC schools. Cornerback Ameer Speed is moving to Michigan State. The only player who doesn’t have a home yet is quarterback JT Daniels, who was considered by some to be a candidate for the Heisman Trophy to start the season.
Even the departures – and more to come – Georgia will be able to withstand any kind of storm that comes through the transfer portal and the NFL draft. That’s because Smart has built six in Georgia during the season.
Loser: Cortez to replace Hankton
However, Georgia has been hit harder in some places than in others. Three Georgia-wide receivers have moved this month, none larger than Jermaine Burton ended up in Alabama.
With the addition of George Pickens, who is announcing the NFL draft, Georgia will have to swap the two most talented wide receivers next season. Georgia still has Brock Bowers returning, but the Bulldogs need more of a station group that has been bullied all season.

Georgia also saw Hankton leave and headed for LSU with a hefty raise. Smart, as expected, has been on purpose in seeking a replacement for Hankton. Of all the honor Hankton deserves for receiving Burton and developing AD Mitchell and Ladd McConkey, Georgia did not recruit as well a wide reception compared to other positions.
Smart eventually finds a replacement for Hankton. Anyone uphill has the task of getting a large reception room on the same level as some of Georgia’s other station groups.
