Companies in the news:

Canadian National Railway Co. (TSX:CNR). $1.35 up to $154.94. Canadian National Railway Co. has named Tracy Robinson as new president and CEO to succeed JJ Ruest. CN says Robinson, the first woman to lead the 103-year-old company, will move to first place on Feb. 28 when Ruest leaves after last year’s failed takeover attempt of U.S. railroad company Kansas City Southern. The Montreal-based company says Ruest will remain in an advisory role until March 31. Robinson joins TC Energy’s business, where she served as an executive after 27 years at CN rival Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. The appointment came as CN reported fourth-quarter profits are up 17 percent from a year ago and that railroads have increased its 2022 dividend by 19 percent. Despite the flooding in BC late last year, CN’s net income was nearly a third of sales, a $1.2 billion jump from $1.02 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Metro Inc. (TSX:MRU). 45 cents down to $64. Vaccination mandates for truck drivers have increased transportation costs but have not impacted shipping goods to stores, says the head of one of Canada’s largest supermarket chains. Instead, Eric La Flèche, Metro president and CEO, said Tuesday the biggest impact on Canada’s food supply chain has been absenteeism due to COVID-19 protocols. The labor shortage caused by quarantined workers affects the entire supply chain — including stores, distribution centers and suppliers, as well as transportation — causing sporadic outages of certain products, he said. Metro increased its quarterly dividend by 10 percent to 27.5 cents a share as the Montreal-based supermarket and drugstore retailer earned $207.7 million or 85 cents per diluted share Tuesday for the 12-week period ending Dec. 18, up from earnings of $191.2 million or 76 cents a share in the same quarter a year earlier. Revenue in the quarter totaled $4.32 billion, up from $4.28 billion in the year-ago quarter. The increase came as same-store grocery sales fell 1.4 percent from a year ago, while same-store sales of pharmacies rose 7.7 percent.
